Fighting to confront the myth of equal pay The Australian Services Union has won the first stage of a case to recognise how gender might influence pay rates for workers in the community services sector. It is the first national decision on equal pay in three decades. But can it make a difference? Middle-class welfare: not happy Julia Perhaps families earning $150,000 a year are 'rich'. Perhaps they're not. But it's intuitively obvious they shouldn't receive welfare. Hate speech, political violence and climate change Hate speech is shifting our culture, creating a social licence to commit political violence against people who belong to designated groups: Jews, greenies, Muslims, progressives of any stripe. A new welfare morality? For all the huffing and puffing about tough love, the reality is an emerging new welfare morality based on welfare as an investment in citizens. High school debate over federal politics Federal politics right now is reduced to a game of definitions. Julia Gillard defines success as a balanced budget in 2014 and a series of welfare reforms which will enlarge the workforce. She's also trying to define the role of her opponent, Tony Abbott, but Abbott's having none of this. His idea of opposing is to highlight the shortcomings of the Government at every opportunity. Defining the topic to your own advantage is an old debating trick. But shouldn't national politics be about a little more than high school debating principles? |
