Gaddafi is dead

Libya's former dictator Moamar Gaddafi has been killed by fighters who overran his hometown of Sirte, Libya's new leaders have confirmed.

Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) leaders said Gaddafi had been found hiding in a cement drainpipe below the main road during the battle that clinched final victory over the city of Sirte.

This morning interim prime minister Mahmoud Jibril said Gaddafi had died from a bullet wound to the head after being caught in the crossfire between NTC fighters and his own supporters.

Earlier reports said he had died in an ambulance on the way to hospital in Misrata.
