Gillard ready for ALP conference 'fireworks'

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has thrown down the gauntlet to the Labor Party, predicting a heated debate in the upcoming ALP conference on the divisive issues of selling uranium to India and same-sex marriage.

For several years the ALP conference has been a virtual rubber stamp of the leader's decisions, but Ms Gillard says she expects to see a "noisy" conference from "passionate" people.

"I believe people will come ready for a debate, ready to make a bit of noise. They may even come prepared for some fireworks and that's a good thing, that's a great thing," Ms Gillard told a press conference in Canberra.

Gillard's gay marriage compromise won't please anyone

Same-sex marriage has been for Gillard what the republic was for Howard.

But while the republic was a winner for Howard, gaining him undying support of monarchists without greatly alienating the middle ground, marriage will be a loser for Gillard because her cynical compromise pleases no-one and convinces no-one.
