Defence releases report into deadly insider attack

Defence has released a "highly critical" report into the circumstances surrounding the shooting deaths of three Australian soldiers in a so-called green-on-blue attack in Afghanistan last year.

Lance Corporal Stjepan Milosevic, 40, Sapper James Martin, 21 and Private Robert Poate, 23, were shot dead by a man wearing an Afghan National Army uniform.

The Vice Chief of the Defence Force says the report has made 22 findings, with around half relating to force protection. It found the measures taken were "at the minimum level" to provide security for the soldiers.

"They did not adequately address the specific situation at the patrol base, and potentially placed personnel at significant risk to the threat of fire, and other environmental actions, enemy action or insider attack," Air Marshal Mark Binskin said, reading the report's findings.

The land of milk and money

On face value, the incursion of supermarkets into financial services makes perfect sense to a busy consumer - bank where you spend and save on transaction fees and earn customer loyalty rewards at the same time.

But if a company knows what your disposable income is, when you get paid, and how you spend your money day in day out, then they know a lot more about you than the Tax Office or possibly even ASIO.

The big data movement is slowly heralding consumers into an uberveillance society. The time to resist the urge to "give in" is now. Your individual freedom is at stake.
