Abbott says he'll respect Indonesia's sovereignty

Tony Abbott has guaranteed he will respect Indonesia's sovereignty when implementing his asylum seeker policies, while Indonesia has agreed greater bilateral cooperation is needed.

The PM says he had a "very frank" and "constructive" discussion with Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta last night.

Mr Abbott told a joint press conference that he is committed to working with Mr Yudhoyono to address people smuggling.

"We had a very frank discussion about issues of sovereignty... and about issues of people smugglers," he said.

"Australia's got total respect for Indonesia's sovereignty."

Libertarian senator shoots his message in the foot

Last week senator-elect David Leyonhjelm of the Liberal Democrats used the one-year anniversary of the rape and murder of Jill Meagher to advocate for increased gun liberalisation in Australia - something he believes would have prevented her from being attacked.

Gillard says sexist attacks filled her with rage

Australia's first female prime minister Julia Gillard has revealed the sexist attacks she endured in office filled her with "murderous rage".

In her first public appearance since being dumped as Prime Minister in June, Ms Gillard appeared at the Sydney Opera House for an interview with feminist author Anne Summers.

During her time as prime minister, Ms Gillard was the focus of sexist attacks, from threatening protest signs to a mock menu written up for a Liberal party fundraiser and vulgar cartoons posted on blogs.

She revealed that she knew about the offensive material but "chose not to focus on them", joking that they filled her with "murderous rage".
