Emissions Reduction Fund to begin allocating money next year

The Federal Government will start allocating money from its Emissions Reduction Fund early next year, Environment Minister Greg Hunt says.

The Government's $2.5 billion Direct Action climate change policy, which includes the fund, passed the Senate late last week with the support of the Palmer United Party and independent senators Nick Xenophon and John Madigan.

As part of the policy, companies will be able to compete for Government funding to pay for programs to reduce carbon emissions.

Opposition environment spokesman Mark Butler says the Emissions Reduction Fund is a waste of taxpayers' money.
