But it's become clear he either has no intention of keeping that commitment, or is simply incapable of doing so. And with continued gaffes and poor decisions - and his chief of staff, Peta Credlin, again under attack - it may be too late for Abbott to regain the authority he needs to lead the Liberal Party.
