Live coverage: Superstorm hits US

At least 13 people were killed in the United States and Canada as the megastorm Sandy slammed into the US east coast today.

Large areas of lower New York City have been flooded; bridge and tunnel access to Manhattan has reportedly been cut; and most of Atlantic City is underwater.

New York's 911 system fielded 10,000 calls every 30 minutes at the height of the storm and America's oldest nuclear power plant has been placed on alert after being damaged.

There are reports of widespread flooding and power outages.

In turn, this would further alienate the party from the rank and file that have made the Liberal Party the most successful political party in Australia since its inception.
