Live coverage: Sandy's trail of destruction

Americans are being warned the death toll is likely to rise after megastorm Sandy slammed into the US causing unprecedented damage in New York City and much of New Jersey.

More than 30 people have been killed and 8 million are still without power after the storm swamped downtown New York and entire towns along the east coast.

A fire destroyed at least 80 homes as the storm struck Breezy Point in Queens and authorities say it may take days to restore power, and repair paralysed transport systems.
