Whether this is true or not almost doesn't matter. Once it takes hold in the minds of reporters, editors, politicians, advisers and others in the political class, it pretty much becomes self-fulfilling. The hostility many journalists exhibited to criticism of coverage of the PM's speech shows there is a genuine reluctance to let the audience in as equals in that "new conversation".
