Live coverage: dozens dead in US school shooting

Police have confirmed 27 people, including 20 children, have have been killed in one of the worst mass shootings in US history after a gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Connecticut.

Witnesses have described horrific scenes at the Sandy Hook Elementary School as parents rushed to find their children.

US president Barack Obama wiped away tears as he delivered an address from the White House describing the crime as "heinous" and saying "our hearts are broken today".

US media is reporting the alleged gunman is 24-year-old Ryan Lanza who also shot his father and then his mother who was a teacher at the school.

Receivers consider suing Banksia directors

The receiver for the failed lender, Banksia Securities, has raised the possibility of legal action against the group's directors and auditor.

Banksia collapsed in October owing investors $660 million, many of them workers or retirees, living in regional Victoria.
