Out of the ashes

On a hot windy afternoon, a day of Total Fire Ban, I went looking for a box I had kept from January 2003.

It held a pile of photos, a scorched page of a book that landed in our yard, a black and twisted fork. A copy of the Canberra Times that listed the houses destroyed, suburb by suburb, street by street รข€" 17 in our street alone, I seem to recall.

A decade ago today the Canberra firestorm ripped through suburban streets, destroying houses and lives. But memories remain and lessons have been learned.
