Election Day live: Australia votes

After 33 days of the campaign, voters finally get a chance to have their official say on who will run the country for the next three years.

Polls throughout the campaign suggest Tony Abbott will lead the Coalition to a comfortable victory, ending Labor's tumultuous six years in power.

Mr Abbott cast his vote at Freshwater surf life saving club in Sydney this morning, and later faced a protest at a booth in the Sydney seat of Barton.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who was relatively quiet this morning, voted in the early afternoon in his Brisbane seat of Griffith.

Follow our live blog to keep up with all the colour of election day, ahead of tonight's coverage when the votes are tallied and the nation's political future decided.
