Abbott starts process to repeal carbon tax

Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott is already piling pressure on the Labor Party to "honour" the new Coalition government's mandate to repeal the carbon tax.

Mr Abbott arrived in Canberra this morning to take the reins of the new government, having yesterday instructed his department to begin drawing up legislation to dump the carbon pricing scheme.

He says Federal Parliament will not resume until late October or early November to deal with it.

"My emphasis will be on being purposeful, methodical, calm, and conscientious... the last thing I want to do is rush the Parliament back for a photo opportunity before the substance of the work is there for it to do," he said.

Can the Coalition's NBN keep pace with change?

In the early 90s, we couldn't grasp the revolutionary potential of the World Wide Web and so laughed it off. Two decades later, we take the ability to Skype and email for granted.

The next revolution in internet technology is fibre to the home. While there are currently no services around the world that require the one-gigabit-per-second download speeds that this technology offers, there soon will be.

The question for the Coalition after the election is, will Australia be able to keep up with the rest of the world under its cut-price NBN?

Japan scraps fishing boat swept 500m inland by tsunami

A northern Japanese city has begun scrapping a fishing boat that was swept far inland by the 2011 tsunami and became one of the most poignant symbols of the disaster.

A ceremony to bless the ship was held nearby before workers got started dismantling the 60-metre vessel, named the No. 18 Kyotoku-maru, according to officials in the city of Kesennuma, which was flattened in the disaster.

The move reverses earlier plans to preserve the boat as a monument to the quake-tsunami disaster, which killed more than 18,000 people and triggered a nuclear accident at Fukushima, the worst atomic crisis in a generation.
