Labor attacks 'secrecy' over asylum boat arrivals

Labor's immigration spokesman Tony Burke has attacked the Federal Government's changes to announcements about asylum seeker boat arrivals, warning of the creation of a "culture of secrecy".

The previous government issued media alerts every time a boat arrived, but no new alerts have been issued since the new Government was sworn in.

The ABC asked both Customs and the Immigration Department whether any boats have arrived in recent days, but the questions were referred to the Minister's office.

Mr Burke, who is the former immigration minister, says the disclosures should be automatic.

A message to the ALP machine: stay out of this

The Labor leadership reforms are ironically proving that the unattractive, unhelpful and increasingly unelectable habits and agendas which have hog-tied the party are still there.

Party databases and resources are being used to promote one candidate over another. I have my own message: can the party machine please stay out of what is meant to be a "rank and file" election?

There are cogent reasons for and against voting for either Bill Shorten or Anthony Albanese. But the point is, please leave us to make the decision, unpressured and without factionalism for our half of the ballot.

JPMorgan fined $970m over 'London whale'

Banking giant JPMorgan Chase has agreed to pay more than $900 million in fines to US and British regulators and made a a rare public admission of wrongdoing over actions involved in last year's 'London whale' trading debacle.

Settlements with four US and British regulators resolve the biggest civil probes of the bank's $6.2 billion of Whale derivatives trading losses last year.

Criminal investigations are still under way.

"JPMorgan failed to keep watch over its traders as they overvalued a very complex portfolio to hide massive losses," the US Securities and Exchange Commission said in announcing the settlement.
