At least 39 dead as terrorists massacre shoppers in Kenyan mall

Gunmen from the Somali terrorist group Al Shabaab have stormed a shopping mall in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, killing at least 39 people and injuring more than 150.

Shoppers fled in panic as the heavily-armed gunmen attacked the mall at midday on Saturday (local time), and photos from inside showed bloodied bodies sprawled on the floor.

Up to 10 gunmen are now believed to be barricaded inside a supermarket and exchanging fire with security forces.

France confirmed two of its citizens had been killed, and there are reports of Americans being injured, but there is no indication that any Australians have been hurt.

The attack appeared designed to achieve maximum global impact by targeting a place frequented by Westerners as well as Kenyans.

Kenya's president Uhuru Kenyatta said some of his relatives were among the slain, and vowed to bring the attackers to justice.

A message to the ALP machine: stay out of this

The Labor leadership reforms are ironically proving that the unattractive, unhelpful and increasingly unelectable habits and agendas which have hog-tied the party are still there.

Party databases and resources are being used to promote one candidate over another. I have my own message: can the party machine please stay out of what is meant to be a "rank and file" election?

There are cogent reasons for and against voting for either Bill Shorten or Anthony Albanese. But the point is, please leave us to make the decision, unpressured and without factionalism for our half of the ballot.

JPMorgan fined $970m over 'London whale'

Banking giant JPMorgan Chase has agreed to pay more than $900 million in fines to US and British regulators and made a a rare public admission of wrongdoing over actions involved in last year's 'London whale' trading debacle.

Settlements with four US and British regulators resolve the biggest civil probes of the bank's $6.2 billion of Whale derivatives trading losses last year.

Criminal investigations are still under way.

"JPMorgan failed to keep watch over its traders as they overvalued a very complex portfolio to hide massive losses," the US Securities and Exchange Commission said in announcing the settlement.
