Australian among dead as most Nairobi mall siege hostages freed

Kenya's military says it has successfully freed most of the hostages in a shopping mall siege which claimed the lives of at least 68 people, including an Australian-UK dual citizen.

Up to 15 armed militants from the Somali terrorist group Al Shabaab had been holding around 30 hostages inside the Westgate mall in the capital Nairobi.

"Most of the hostages have been released, and the Kenya Defence Forces has taken control of most parts of the building," Kenyan military spokesman Colonel Cyrus Oguna told local television.

He did not say how many hostages had been held or freed.

The Department of Foreign Affairs last night confirmed the death of a person holding dual Australian and British citizenship, but did not provide any further details.
