Late yesterday it emerged the Coalition had released a policy which would have blocked adult content on internet and phone services, and people would have to opt out if they wanted unfiltered content. But just hours later - after communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull defended the plan during an interview with triple j's Hack - the policy was retracted. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has blamed a lack of "quality control" for the error, but that explanation has done little to dispel a storm of Labor criticism. The Coalition has finally revealed that it will create a $6 billion improvement on the budget bottom line and start paying down debt. But to get there, they will cut $4.5 billion from foreign aid. Such a sharp cut to foreign aid deserved far more than a 24-hour debate, but it nevertheless caps a smart and disciplined election campaign from the Coalition. More » Is that all there is? The Opposition document on enhancing child safety online said an Abbott government would force mobile phone operators and internet service providers (ISPs) to install filtering services to block adult content. But in an embarrassing blunder, Coalition communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull promoted the policy on triple j's Hack, before quickly backtracking. Communications Minister Anthony Albanese says the backflip shows the Coalition has hidden agendas ahead of tomorrow's federal election.
