Syria welcomes proposal to surrender weapons

Syria is warning of widespread repercussions if it is attacked by the US, but it has welcomed a Russian proposal to put its chemical weapons under international supervision.

In an interview recorded in Damascus with a US TV network, Syrian president Bashar al-Assad warned the US to "expect everything" if it attacks.

His government also welcomed an unexpected proposal, set out by Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, for Syria to place its weapons under international supervision and have them destroyed.

Russia made the idea public after US secretary of state John Kerry made an off-the-cuff comment which he has since said was rhetorical.

Julian Assange, the political outsider

Working with Julian Assange's federal election campaign, one was struck by a profound sense of disconnect between what many of his supporters thought he was, or wanted him to be, and the reality of his political philosophy.

While many Assange supporters could be characterised as hard left or green left, the founder of WikiLeaks is a far more nuanced and intelligent thinker who leans towards a small-government, freedom-maximising libertarian position.

The WikiLeaks Party is not left or right in the Australian context, and perhaps that is why some have struggled intellectually to support it and its founder.

Abbott starts process to repeal carbon tax

Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott is already piling pressure on the Labor Party to "honour" the new Coalition government's mandate to repeal the carbon tax.

Mr Abbott arrived in Canberra this morning to take the reins of the new government, having yesterday instructed his department to begin drawing up legislation to dump the carbon pricing scheme.

He says Federal Parliament will not resume until late October or early November to deal with it.

"My emphasis will be on being purposeful, methodical, calm, and conscientious... the last thing I want to do is rush the Parliament back for a photo opportunity before the substance of the work is there for it to do," he said.
