Typhoon hits Vietnam as millions await aid in devastated Philippines

A weakened Typhoon Haiyan has made landfall in Vietnam as a massive relief effort continues in the Philippines.

At least 10,000 people are feared dead in the Philippines' province of Leyte after the massive storm cut a swathe of destruction across the region.

The typhoon flattened homes, schools and other infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

Philippines president Benigno Aquino says the priority is to restore power and communications across the country, as thousands of troops are deployed to the disaster zones and military cargo planes fly in supplies.

Despite the system weakening, Vietnamese authorities are taking no chances, with more than 600,000 people evacuated from Vietnam's coastal areas.
