Truss labels WA Senate recount a 'debacle'

Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss says the West Australian Senate recount has been a "debacle" and a "huge embarrassment" to Australia's electoral system.

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) yesterday announced the results of the recount, with Greens candidate Scott Ludlam and Australian Sports Party candidate Wayne Dropulich picking up seats over Labor's Louise Pratt and the Palmer United Party's Zhenya Dio Wang.

The results are likely to be challenged in the Court of Disputed Returns after it emerged the AEC had lost 1,375 votes, which remain missing.

Mr Truss says a new election, if decided on by the courts, should happen as soon as possible.

School reforms come not a moment too soon

Opportunities for young people in the workplace are dwindling further and further; meanwhile, the poorest schools are increasingly struggling to lift up the most disadvantaged students.

The Gonski reforms - in those states lucky enough to have signed up - may start to do some of the rebalancing required. A start would be fully-funded transition officers in the neediest schools to actively help disadvantaged kids go from school to work or vocational training.

Otherwise, as Sally James who runs the Brotherhood of St Laurence Youth Transition program says, we risk creating a lost generation.

ANZ expects dollar to stay high until US winds down stimulus

ANZ chief executive Mike Smith says it is unlikely the high Australian dollar will start to drop until the US Federal Reserve starts reducing its massive bond-buying program.

The tapering of the Federal Reserve's program to buy $US85 billion of Treasury bonds a month is expected to start at some point in 2014.

Mr Smith told the ABC's Inside Business program that "adjustments" to the exchange rate will come with tapering.

Challenge to WA Senate recount as fresh poll likely

Labor and the Palmer United Party say they will challenge the result of the West Australian Senate recount, with the fallout from Saturday's disputed result likely to trigger a fresh vote.

Greens candidate Scott Ludlam and the Australian Sports Party's Wayne Dropulich won Senate spots after a controversial recount.

The result, coming just days after revelations the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) had lost 1,375 votes in the state, has cost Labor and the PUP a Senate seat each.

ABC election analyst Antony Green said the final result may need to be decided by a fresh election if the Court of Disputed Returns cannot determine winners.
