NSW plans to fight Gonski funding changes

The federal Government is under pressure from some states to honour the "Gonski" school funding deals that were signed before the election.

New federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne has said the Coalition cannot go ahead with the "Gonski" funding arrangements and will go back to the "drawing board".

New South Wales and Victoria struck deals with the former Labor government to access a six-year funding agreement for the Gonski model.

NSW education minister Adrian Piccoli says the state has a "binding agreement" that must be honoured, and will fight any changes to the deal struck with Labor.

The Victorian Government has released a statement saying before the election Tony Abbott promised all existing deals would remain in place if he became Prime Minister.

Retailers renew calls for tax on online purchases

Retailers are welcoming a renewed debate on imposing the GST on online purchases made overseas, with state and federal treasurers set to discuss the issue this week.

They say charging tax on imported goods worth less than $1,000 will boost jobs and could net the Government $1 billion of extra revenue each year.

Federal Treasury has been asked to examine ways to charge the GST on low-value imports and will report back to the treasurers.
