Indonesia says it won't accept rescued asylum seekers

Indonesia's security affairs minister says his country will not accept a group of asylum seekers Australia has attempted to send back to Indonesia.

The Navy has rescued passengers from an asylum seeker boat that got into trouble off the coast of Java yesterday morning.

Indonesia says the boat was outside its territorial waters but it is understood Australia attempted to get Indonesia to take the asylum seekers back to Java.

In a text message, Indonesia's coordinating minister for security and political affairs, Djoko Suyanto, told the ABC that Indonesia has never agreed to such wishes and will not accept returns of asylum seekers.

Australia's Immigration Minister, Scott Morrison, could not say where the latest group would end up and rejected suggestions there was a mid-ocean stand-off between the two countries.

Punishing the men won't stop hazing

As the ADF faces further allegations of hazing amongst sailors, we should consider why men might feel compelled to engage in this behaviour.

What do they gain in terms of status or manhood in carrying it out on others? And how does the culture of their workplace suggest to them that this kind of behaviour might be what it wants from its men?

Men are not naturally attracted to the practice of hazing. But hazing is a practice of masculinity which often allows men to claim their status as "real men" in a group.

Almost 300 jobs to go as Qantas shuts Avalon base

Qantas has announced it is closing its Avalon heavy maintenance facility near Geelong in Victoria, resulting in the loss of 300 jobs.

The airline has confirmed that the plant, which maintains its ageing fleet of Boeing 747s, will close by the end of March next year.

It said 53 Qantas employees and 246 contractors would be affected.

"We're gradually retiring our 747 aircraft, which means there's just not enough work to keep the base at Avalon viable and productive," Qantas Australia CEO Lyell Strambi said.

"Over the next four years there are 22 months with no scheduled maintenance at Avalon for our 747 aircraft. During this time there will be no aircraft in the hangar for our employees to work on."

Unions say staff at the plant are bitterly disappointed and furious with management for closing the plant.
