Video emerges of man claimed to be Australia's first suicide bomber

New video has emerged of the man claimed to be Australia's first suicide bomber.

The bomber, suspected of being a Brisbane man named Ahmed, is seen standing next to the explosives-laden truck which is believed to have used in an attack on a Syrian army checkpoint in September.

The video appears to have been published by an Al Qaeda-linked jihadist group.

Since sketchy images of the bombing and a still image of the bomber emerged in September, Australia's intelligence and police agencies have been trying to trace his route from suburban obscurity to jihad.

It is understood they have identified the man they believe carried out the bombing.

However, his family has denied he was involved and insists he is still alive in Turkey.

Shared memory and the licensing of hate

The historical significance of Kristallnacht, the 75th anniversary of which was marked this past weekend, cannot be doubted.

It marked the escalation of Nazi hatred of Jews into systematic violence and illustrated the power of words in the mounting anti-Semitism of the time.

It also serves as a powerful cautionary tale as we debate the racial vilification provisions in the Race Discrimination Act.

Thousands more feared dead in Philippines as new storm approaches

As authorities reach more areas hit by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines there are disturbing reports emerging about the mounting number of dead.

The reports come as relief workers brace for another storm front to hit the devastated nation, with the country's president declaring an official state of national calamity.

Officials estimate up to 10,000 people have died in Tacloban City alone, and they believe hundreds of others have been killed elsewhere.

The United Nations says the world should "expect the worst" for the final toll.

Proportion of first home buyers entering property market hits a record low

First home buyers now make up the smallest proportion of the housing market on record, in Australian Bureau of Statistics figures that go back 22 years.

The bureau's data show the proportion of first home buyers dipped to 12.5 per cent in September, the lowest level since it started collecting the figures in July 1991 - the previous low was 12.8 per cent in March 2004.

The fall in lending to first-home buyers comes despite research that shows banks are willing to lend more of the purchase price than they were a few years ago.
