| By Indonesia correspondent George Roberts, staff Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is refusing to accept Prime Minister Tony Abbott's statement to Parliament about the spying scandal. Indonesia has demanded an explanation but Mr Abbott told Parliament that Australia should not have to apologise or explain intelligence operations and the "steps we take to protect our country". Mr Yudhoyono says he "regretted" Mr Abbott's response and he is still waiting for an official explanation - rather than a speech aimed at Australian domestic politics. The ABC understands that last night, Mr Yudhoyono met with at least three government ministers who are key to Australia's interests: The agriculture minister, who oversees beef imports, the coordinating minister in charge of cooperation on asylum seekers, and the foreign minister. Meanwhile, Australia's former ambassador to China, Ross Garnaut, has warned Australia risks becoming isolated in Asia if it cannot repair its relationship with Indonesia. More » |
