Indonesia awaits formal explanation from Abbott on spying

Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is refusing to accept Prime Minister Tony Abbott's statement to Parliament about the spying scandal.

Indonesia has demanded an explanation but Mr Abbott told Parliament that Australia should not have to apologise or explain intelligence operations and the "steps we take to protect our country".

Mr Yudhoyono says he "regretted" Mr Abbott's response and he is still waiting for an official explanation - rather than a speech aimed at Australian domestic politics.

The ABC understands that last night, Mr Yudhoyono met with at least three government ministers who are key to Australia's interests: The agriculture minister, who oversees beef imports, the coordinating minister in charge of cooperation on asylum seekers, and the foreign minister.

Meanwhile, Australia's former ambassador to China, Ross Garnaut, has warned Australia risks becoming isolated in Asia if it cannot repair its relationship with Indonesia.

Queensland party crackdown out of control

For all the absurdities of Queensland's anti-bikies legislation, the bill currently being considered by the Queensland parliament is probably worse.

The bogey-man this time is "out-of-control" parties. The provisions are so broad that there's no way Queensland police could enforce them, as written, on all of the innumerable parties across the state in any given weekend.

There are bad eggs in law enforcement, as there are in the general public. Queensland's anti-party legislation empowers good eggs and bad eggs alike.

US farmers warn about ADM's GrainCorp takeover bid

As the Treasurer Joe Hockey weighs the arguments over the takeover bid of GrainCorp, one of the oldest farm organisations in the US has warned that increased concentration in the industry will be bad news for Australian farmers.

The National Farmers Union says it has watched the negative impact of foreign takeovers in its own country and says Australia should reject the deal offered by Archer Daniels Midland.
