Women 'kept as slaves for 30 years' rescued from London house

Three women have been rescued by British police from a London house where they are believed to have been held as slaves for at least 30 years.

A 69-year-old Malaysian woman, a 57-year-old Irish woman and a 30-year-old British woman have been rescued from what police say is one of the most extreme cases of slavery the UK has seen.

"We have seen some cases where people have been held for up to 10 years, but we have never seen anything of this magnitude before," Detective Inspector Kevin Hyland from Scotland Yard's human trafficking unit said.

The case came to light after one of the woman contacted a charity she had seen featured in a television program.

A 67-year-old man and 67-year-old woman have been arrested at their home in south London in connection with the case.

'Budget emergency' requires action

Talking about a 'budget emergency' was easy for the Coalition while in opposition, but balancing insatiable demands for more spending with limited revenue raising capability is not.

The Abbott Government's rhetoric about the state of the Australian economy means nothing if they don't cut low-priority spending.

RBA governor issues currency warning

The governor of the Reserve Bank has issued his strongest warning yet that the bank may intervene in currency markets to push the value of the dollar down.

In a speech marking the 30th anniversary of the float of the dollar, Glenn Stevens acknowledged that the strength of the Australian currency is hurting parts of the economy and causing painful changes in many businesses.

"But what of recent levels of the exchange rate? They have been blamed for many disappointing corporate results and triggered numerous restructurings, instances of 'offshorings' and job shedding," he said.

He added that the persistent strength in the dollar is unprecedented since it was floated.
