Crowds gathered in Dallas have observed a moment of silence to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of US president John F Kennedy in the city's Dealey Plaza. Commemorations are being held across the country - but the most significant was in Dallas, which for many years bore the shame of the tragedy. At 12.30pm (local time) Friday, bells rang through out Dallas, marking the exact moment half a century before when two bullets struck Kennedy as he rode in an open-top limousine with his wife, Jacquie.
