US marks 50 years since John F Kennedy was assassinated

Crowds gathered in Dallas have observed a moment of silence to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of US president John F Kennedy in the city's Dealey Plaza.

Commemorations are being held across the country - but the most significant was in Dallas, which for many years bore the shame of the tragedy.

At 12.30pm (local time) Friday, bells rang through out Dallas, marking the exact moment half a century before when two bullets struck Kennedy as he rode in an open-top limousine with his wife, Jacquie.

Heavy skies reflected the somber mood of the thousands of people gathered for the first official memorial in the Texas town that has long sought to shed its reputation as the "City of Hate".

So far, Abbott’s best is not good enough

Tony Abbott insists he'll have a foreign policy with a Jakarta focus and not a Geneva focus. To this point, Geneva will be well pleased.

DJs shareholders in protest vote against executive pay plan

David Jones has received a first strike against its executive pay plan at its annual general meeting.

More than 25 per cent of investors voted against the remuneration plan, and if the result is repeated next year, a vote will be forced on whether the board should be spilled.

The protest vote came after the David Jones chairman apologised to investors about a decision to approve share purchases by two directors days before the release of key sales results.

Joyce postpones visit to Indonesia as spying scandal continues

Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce has postponed a planned trip to Indonesia in light of the ongoing spying scandal.

Jakarta has reacted angrily to news Australian spies tapped the phones of the Indonesian president, his wife and inner circle.

In a statement, Mr Joyce said he has been having ongoing talks with Indonesia about visiting the country but that he has agreed to postpone next week's trip.

It comes amid reports a state-owned Indonesian firm has halted talks with the Australian cattle industry until the Government apologises to Indonesia.
