Waterhouse favoured to win first Cup with Fiorente

Today's Melbourne Cup field is being hailed as the strongest ever, with the calibre of international runners - trained both locally and overseas - said to be the highest in the race's 153-year history.

Gai Waterhouse is favoured to win her first Melbourne Cup with Fiorente, but the race that stops a nation is filled with international interest.

Nine overseas runners will help make up the field, including 2011 winner Dunaden.

The only thing missing is the man who has won the race more times than anyone else - Bart Cummings - whose gelding Precedence failed by one spot to get into the field and give the maestro a chance for a 13th Cup.

Take a look at all the form and the latest prices in the lead-up to the Cup, which will jump at 3:00pm (AEDT).

Our political ignorance won't stay blissful forever

It is now clear that the underlying principle of the Abbott Government is to be ignorance: not only are the masses to be kept as far as possible in the dark, but the Government itself does not want to know.

Holden workers' pay freeze abandoned

A pay freeze is being abandoned and Holden workers will get a 3 per cent rise, as the car maker waits on news of more taxpayer assistance.

The workforce at Elizabeth in northern Adelaide agreed in August to a three-year pay freeze and cuts to conditions, but only if the company committed to building its Cruze and Commodore models in Australia beyond 2016.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union official John Camillo said Holden was yet to give a commitment so workers would receive a pay rise and potential bonuses from November 15.
