The official death toll from one of the most powerful storms on record stands at 138. However, the Philippines Red Cross estimates about 1,200 people have died. Vietnam has started evacuating over 100,000 people from the path of the typhoon, which is expected to make landfall near the central city of Hue on Sunday morning local time. China is also on alert. Known as Yolanda in the Philippines, Haiyan smashed into the nation's central islands and provinces packing winds of up to 315 kilometres per hour.
