What's been lost in this discussion is the fact that tax is simply a means to an end. Shouldn't we talk about what sort of Australia we'd like to create before we discuss how we're going to raise the revenue to pay for it? If we could agree that housing the homeless, empowering the first Australians, and building a better class of submarine made sense as a set of shared national goals, we might also be more disposed to raising the GST, company tax, land tax or whatever else seemed necessary to make it happen.
