Survivor 'born again' after days trapped in Kathmandu rubble
ABC News
Hundreds have cheered as rescuers toiling amid rubble left by Nepal's earthquake pulled a boy and a woman to safety after they had been trapped since last Saturday.

Krishna Khadka, believed to be in her 20s or 30s, was found lying along with the bodies of three other people, police said. "She was injured but she was conscious and talking," a Nepal army major said at the scene. "It is as though she had been born again."

Hours earlier, police pulled 15-year-old Pemba Tamang from the collapsed ruins of Kathmandu's Hilton Hotel. "I saw two containers of butter and ate it to survive," he said after his rescue. "I also found a wet cloth and squeezed water from it to drink."

But after the euphoria of rescue, survivors must confront the reality of how they will cope with life after the quake.

Nepali farmer Rishi Khanal l, 26, was rescued after being buried for about 80 hours. But as he recuperated at Tribhuvan University's teaching hospital after doctors amputated his leg, he said he would rather have died.

"What will I do for the rest of my life? I don't even have the money to buy a wheelchair now. How will I spend the rest of (my) life and support my family?"
