Our empathy wasn't little, but it was too late

A decade ago we heaped attention on Schapelle Corby and Michelle Leslie, and gave barely a thought to the Bali Nine and their low photogenic rating.

It was only after we got to know Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, and their families, that we seemed to collectively come to the decision that the death penalty was abhorrent and these men should be shown mercy.

Next time, let's not wait for someone to warm the cockles of our hearts before we take a massed stand against state-sanctioned murder.
