Coalition unlikely to back Migration Act changes

The Coalition has given its strongest indication yet it will not support changes to the Migration Act as they are currently drafted, saying they strip asylum seekers of their protections.

Opposition frontbencher Greg Hunt says the changes, which would grant the immigration minister broad powers to send asylum seekers overseas for processing, go too far.

"What they are looking at is breaching all of the Australian obligations and duties under the 1951 convention," he said.
