Caviar still queen despite Ascot scare

A cloud hangs over the future of Australian racing queen Black Caviar following her nerve-wracking win in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

A lacklustre performance by the mare and a "brain fade" by jockey Luke Nolen almost cost the pair victory, with Moonlight Cloud and Restiadargent nearly swallowing Black Caviar at the post.

However narrow, the win is the crowning achievement of a record-breaking career that now stands at 22 starts without defeat, for 12 Group Ones and total prize money of $6.3 million.

Even so, trainer Peter Moody says he will not hesitate to retire Black Caviar if things are not 100 per cent when she returns to Australia.

Misplaced moral lessons in the Prime Minister's tale

On the second anniversary of Julia Gillard's ascendancy, some people find moral lessons in the Prime Minister's tale.

But if you're looking for moral tales, you should not be looking to politics. This is not a world where good and evil fight it out and justice wins in the end.
