Jorge Mario Bergoglio elected Pope

Argentinean Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been announced as the new Pope and will take the name Francis I.

White smoke began pouring from the Sistine Chapel's chimney early this morning to announce that the new pontiff had been elected by cardinals on the second day of the papal conclave.

In one of his first messages to the 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide, Pope Francis called on the world to "set off on a path of love and fraternity".

Pope Francis is the church's first Latin American pontiff. He is also the first Jesuit.
