Beattie warns Labor against move on Gillard

Former Queensland premier Peter Beattie has ruled out running for prime minister, saying Julia Gillard is the best person to lead the country.
There has been speculation about the Prime Minister's future amid the fallout from the Government's failed Malaysian asylum seeker deal.
Mr Beattie says changing leaders at this point would destroy the Government and has urged party colleagues to "hold their nerve".More »

Without the Malaysian Solution, there's no refuge in sight

As the High Court has said nuh-uh to Malaysia and Nauru, there are now two courses of action open to the Federal Government as it tries to reinvigorate its asylum seeker policy.
First and foremost is to process asylum applications in Australia. The second is to station more DIAC staff at embassies in countries from which asylum seekers come.
One thing's for certain though; the Government's in some pretty deep water with this issue and there's no refuge in sight.More »
