Violence erupts amid massive Syria protests

Syrian forces are accused of firing nail bombs to disperse tens of thousands of protesters who have turned out on the streets to renew calls for the removal of president Bashar al Assad's regime.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says a dozen civilians were killed when security forces opened fire on protesters.

2011 was a bad year, 2012 will be much worse

And so, here we are again. The end of 2011 looms, the stern faces of Janus looking back on what has been and saying, "well that was crap", and forward to what will be and saying, "it just gets worse".
