By chief political correspondent Emma Griffiths The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has asked former Australian Federal Police commissioner Mick Keelty to investigate after more than 1,300 ballots went missing in the recount of the Senate race in Western Australia. A statement from the AEC says 1,375 votes, which had been verified during the initial count, could not be "located, rechecked or verified in the recount process". Mr Keelty has been asked to hold an independent inquiry, tasked with "establishing the facts regarding the misplaced ballot papers, and identifying any administrative process and/or procedural failings that may have occurred".
