Firefighters are continuing to gain the upper hand in the battle against bushfires in the Blue Mountains, but warn it could take weeks for them to be extinguished. Watch-and-act orders remain in place for the three fires burning west of Sydney, near Lithgow, Mount Victoria and Springwood. Yesterday, 43-year-old pilot David Black died after his water-bombing plane crashed while fighting a fire at Wirritin, in Budawang National Park. Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons described Mr Black's death of the as a "huge tragedy". Meanwhile, the RFS says firefighters are making progress with their aggressive approach to back-burning around the State Mine (Lithgow) fire. The fire burning near Springwood is within containment lines, although the RFS says residents may see some smoke and should remain vigilant.
