Firefighters in control as Blue Mountains bushfire threat eases

Firefighters are continuing to gain the upper hand in the battle against bushfires in the Blue Mountains, but warn it could take weeks for them to be extinguished.

Watch-and-act orders remain in place for the three fires burning west of Sydney, near Lithgow, Mount Victoria and Springwood.

Yesterday, 43-year-old pilot David Black died after his water-bombing plane crashed while fighting a fire at Wirritin, in Budawang National Park.

Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons described Mr Black's death of the as a "huge tragedy".

Meanwhile, the RFS says firefighters are making progress with their aggressive approach to back-burning around the State Mine (Lithgow) fire.

The fire burning near Springwood is within containment lines, although the RFS says residents may see some smoke and should remain vigilant.

Meanwhile, firefighters say the Mount Victoria fire has been contained is no longer an immediate threat to property.
