Abbott visits Tarin Kot, says Australia's longest war is ending

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has used a surprise visit to Afghanistan to declare the end of Australia's longest war.

Mr Abbott addressed Australian troops in a special ceremony at the Tarin Kot base in Uruzgan province.

He was joined by Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, underlining the bipartisan political support throughout the war.

Mr Abbott says Australia's withdrawal from Afghanistan is bittersweet.

"[It's] sweet because hundreds of soldiers will be home for Christmas; bitter because not all Australian families have had their sons, fathers and partners return," he said.
