Peter Cosgrove named as next governor-general

Former Defence chief Peter Cosgrove has been nominated as Australia's next governor-general by Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

The highly decorated retired military officer will replace Quentin Bryce, whose five-year term ends in March.

General Cosgrove will be the nation's 26th governor-general, and will represent the Queen in Australia.

"I am confident that in this new role he will continue to deliver to a grateful nation leadership beyond politics," Mr Abbott said.

General Cosgrove served as chief of the Defence Force from 2002 until his retirement from active service in 2005.

After winning the Military Cross for his service as a young officer in Vietnam, he came to prominence in 1999, when he commanded international forces in East Timor, overseeing the country's transition to independence.

It doesn't have to be like that. Even in an age when "money doesn't talk, it swears", we don't have to swept away in a tsunami of ads.
