Thousands mourn slain protester at Kiev funeral

Thousands of people have packed into a church in Kiev for the funeral of a young protester shot dead during clashes in the Ukrainian capital last week.

The opposition called off a massive Sunday rally out of respect for the funeral of Mikhail Zhyznevsky, whose coffin was borne through the streets of Kiev before his burial.

Mourners spilled over into a square outside Saint Michael's Cathedral on what would have been his 26th birthday, many bringing flowers and waving Ukrainian flags with black ribbons.

"He was a very brave, very kind person who gave his life for the future of Ukraine," said one Kiev resident paying respects.

President Viktor Yanukovych is facing continued calls to stand down after he pulled out of a free trade deal with the European Union in favour of closer ties with Ukraine's former Soviet overlord, Russia.

A death at sea

In a measured but sombre voice, the captain explained someone had gone overboard. Our cruise ship, Pacific Pearl, was involved in a search for the missing person.

We weren't just looking for a speck in the sea, we were all specks. We were at the mercy of the Pacific.

Brewing giant challenged on motives behind Bluetongue closure

A former ACCC deputy chairman has questioned the motives behind brewing giant's closure of Bluetongue Brewery in the NSW.

Alan Asher has suggested referring the closure to the ACCC, arguing the brewery's closure was more about multinational firms trying to kill off local beer brands rather than a sensible business decision.

The company says the closure is due to excessive capacity and duplication caused by the acquisition of Foster's.

Fish with nostrils sheds light on birth of breathing

Palaeontologists have come up with a finding that could answer the age-old question of how ancient fish first gained a foothold on land before flourishing and evolving.

Researchers have shown that small holes on the top of the head of one bony fish species are primitive nostrils and were essential for its ancestor to emerge from the water 380 million years ago.

They say the discovery could also explain how humans developed such an acute sense of hearing.
