Somali asylum seeker claims he was sprayed in eyes by Australian Navy

New details have emerged about asylum seeker claims that Australian sailors mistreated them during a boat interception operation earlier this month.

A Somali asylum seeker has told the ABC that there were angry protests when people found out the boat was being turned around and they were being returned to Indonesia.

He alleges that during the onboard argument he suffered burns when he came into contact with a hot engine after an Australian sailor sprayed him in the eyes.

The Government has emphatically rejected the claims of mistreatment.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says it is normal for Navy personnel to carry personal defensive equipment and described suggestions that they had been used outside standard procedure as "baseless".

A year of elections - and mixed signals

This is not a federal election year, yet it is a year of elections just the same.

2014 brings us state and federal by-elections in Queensland, state elections in Tasmania, South Australia, and Victoria, and a possible Senate election re-run in Western Australia.

But while there are lots of results to read and dissect, don't count on any single contest giving us any guide to how the Abbott Government is travelling.

SPC Ardmona jobs in doubt after Coalition denies $25m assistance

The Federal Government has rejected a $25 million assistance request from SPC Ardmona, raising the prospect of thousands of job losses in the regional Victorian city of Shepparton.

The fruit processing company had sought help from the Victorian and Federal governments to restructure its operations, arguing the high Australian dollar and cheap imports had made it hard to compete.

But Prime Minister Tony Abbott says SPC Ardmona's parent company, Coca-Cola Amatil, has the resources to carry out that restructure without the need for government funding.

"The decision that came from the Cabinet today does set an important marker," Mr Abbott told reporters in Canberra yesterday afternoon.

About 700 factory positions face being slashed outright, while thousands of jobs could be affected in flow-on industries.
