Boys 'rented out' for abuse at Salvos home

Children at a Salvation Army boys' home in Sydney were "rented out" to strangers who sexually abused them, the royal commission has been told.

A policeman who investigated allegations of abuse at the Bexley Boys Home in Sydney's south has been questioned about a paedophile network operating from the home.

He told of one boy who was picked up by a woman in a Salvation Army uniform and taken to a home where he was sexually abused.

When the boy reported the abuse back at the home he was caned.

Final HSBC PMI confirms Chinese manufacturing decline

A widely watched index of Chinese manufacturing has confirmed the sector declined in January.

HSBC's final manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for January was all but identical to an initial estimate released by the bank last week.

The final PMI was 49.5, slightly worse than the flash estimate of 49.6, and well down on last month's reading of 50.5.

The index also showed Chinese factory workers being laid off at the fastest rate since March 2009.
