Man charged with murdering NSW environment officer

A farmer whose property had been at the centre of an illegal land-clearing dispute has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting dead an environment officer.

Ian Robert Turnbull, 79, is accused of killing Glen Turner, a father of two and NSW Environment Department officer at Croppa Creek in northern New South Wales.

Today the Moree Local Court was told Turnbull had been in a long-running dispute with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, and had a criminal history.

"We can't believe that someone's come out here to do his job, and we're always the ones to be the neighbourly ones and hospitable, but here's a man who's lost his life," neighbour Elaine Anderson said.

MH17: Australia's shallow foreign policy revealed

Some see Australia's mission to the MH17 crash site in eastern Ukraine as a heartening sign of its willingness to engage, hard-headed, with the world, wherever Australia's interests demand it.

Today, though, the AFP's Ukraine Operation is looking more and more like the charge of the light brigade: gallant, but not bright.

In the long run, anger, however righteous, isn't a substitute for doing our homework.

Australia more vulnerable than before GFC, economist says

A senior economist with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has issued a stark warning about the risks still facing the global economy.

Australian-born Adrian Blundell-Wignall, who is based in Paris as the OECD's director of financial and enterprise affairs, says his home country is more vulnerable now than it was when the global financial crisis (GFC) hit.

First on his list of risks is the continuing growth of emerging economies, which he says now account for 50 per cent of global production.

Hanson-Young denied access to Curtin Detention Centre

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says she has been denied access to the Curtin Detention Centre to visit the 157 Tamil asylum seekers who were held on an Australia Customs ship for almost a month.

Senator Hanson-Young says she had flown to Broome from Adelaide and was on the road to the remote West Australian centre when she was informed that she would not be allowed inside.

She says she has been visiting detention centres for more than six years and this is the first time she has been blocked from entering the Curtin facility.

"This is highly suspicious that I have been denied access today. This is a political move by the Immigration Minister. What is he hiding? What doesn't he want me to see?"
