Israel, Hamas agree to 72-hour ceasefire in Gaza

Israel and Hamas have agreed to an unconditional 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire to begin later today.

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon and US secretary of state John Kerry announced the temporary break in fighting, which is due to start 8:00am Friday local time (3:00pm AEST), in a joint statement.

The statement said "forces on the ground will remain in place" during the truce, implying that Israeli ground forces will not withdraw.

The announcement came after the US government denounced the shelling of a United Nations school in Gaza that killed 15 people as "totally unacceptable and totally indefensible".

Woodside Petroleum and Shell's decade-long attempt to formalise their separation now appears doomed after Australian institutions objected to the terms of the $2.68 billion deal which involved Woodside buying back a 10 per cent stake in itself from Shell.

Australian institutions, incensed that Shell was receiving preferential treatment, arced up against the proposal even though the share buyback would have lifted their returns.
