Greste was caught in Egypt's tangled web as it moved from dictatorship to political pluralism to authoritarianism and, more than this, his case also fell prey to a set of complex regional relations. These external elements are showing signs of calming, so releasing him now would not only help improve Australian-Egyptian relations, but also Egypt's international standing.
