Westpac warns of sharp deterioration in consumer confidence

Westpac is describing a sharp deterioration in consumer confidence this month as "disturbing".

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute Index fell 5.7 per cent in December to a level of 91.1.

Westpac chief economist Bill Evans said it was an unsettling result with the index now at its lowest level since August 2011.

The much weaker-than-expected growth figures played a big part and Westpac said readings on the day of the data release were "significantly weaker".
