ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • The Federal Government will make changes the controversial Centrelink debt recovery program. Welfare recipients will be able to launch an internal review before debt proceedings begin

  • President-elect Donald Trump has hailed Brexit and said it will be "very hard" to keep the European Union together. Mr Trump said he would offer to end sanctions on Russia in exchange for a nuclear arms reduction deal

  • Australians are sending "unhelpful" donations to disaster zones that are doing more harm than good, according to a report commissioned by the Australian Red Cross. Instead of sending items like high heels, handbags and canned goods, aid agencies have issued a plea for Australians to send cash instead

A new report from Oxfam shows just eight men own the same amount of wealth as the poorest half of the world's population. The list includes Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Here's what's coming up tonight:

  • 6:30pm AEDT: Nick Kyrgios faces Gastao Elias in the first round of the Australian Open

  • 7:40pm AEDT: The Adelaide Strikers take on the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL
