The ACCC's 2014 resolution to end fuel discounts

This Christmas I received a massive fuel discount voucher: 35 cents per litre. I let the petrol tank run down to maximise the benefit, and thus gained a discount of $14.08 when I filled it up.

I won't have to worry about such things in 2014 since the maximum discount I will now be permitted to enjoy on a similar petrol purchase is $1.61.

I have the ACCC to thank for this. The government body which purports to protect consumers from anti-competitive business practices has done something that the supermarkets, in their wildest fantasies of market-rigging, couldn't.

Australia ushers in 2014 with fireworks extravaganza

Australia has brought in the new year with millions of people around the country dazzled by massive fireworks displays.

About 1.5 million people gathered at Sydney Harbour to watch the country's biggest fireworks show take off from the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

It was the first time in more than a decade that the Opera House played a major role in the extravaganza, with fireworks exploding from four Opera House's sails.

Artist Reg Mombassa, best known for his work for the surfwear brand Mambo, was the creative ambassador for this year's display.

Fireworks lit up the harbour as this year's bridge motif - a blinking eye - was revealed.

A waterfall of golden sparks showered down from the bridge towards the end of the show.

Australia's march to free speech has begun

The High Court's decision in Unions NSW vs New South Wales is one of the most significant decisions for democracy and human rights in Australian history.

It's on par with the 1951 decision which quashed the Communist Party Dissolution Bill.

It reveals a High Court inching - slowly, reluctantly, unhappily - towards a full-blown recognition of the human right to freedom of speech and freedom of association: the sort of uncompromising liberties expressly found in United States' First Amendment.
